Full Moon names date back to Native Americans, of what is now the northern and eastern United States. The tribes kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full Moon. Their names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred. There was some variation in the Moon names, but in general, the same ones were current throughout the Algonquin tribes from New England to Lake Superior. European settlers followed that custom and created some of their own names. Since the lunar month is only 29 days long on the average, the full Moon dates shift from year to year. Here is the Farmers Almanac’s list of the full Moon names.

The moon shown in these shots is the Full Corn Moon. The name is attributed to Native Americans because it marked when corn was supposed to be harvested. Most often, the September full moon is actually the Harvest Moon.

This is one of my favorite shots from my trip into Washington DC last night. I need to work on my timing a little more. I think I’ll definitely be shooting more planes at night soon!

Please Help Me Fellow Photogs!

I’m in need of information and/or advice from photogs more experienced than myself. I went shooting last night in DC and did a lot of long exposure shots. Several of them turned out really, really well. Quite a few, however, have these weird light blobs on them. I cleaned both my lens and UV filter before I went out. Can you take a look at the shots below and give me any idea what caused the marks I indicated with arrows… and how to keep from getting them?!

Any and all advice is much, much appreciated.

I’d like to share a couple shades of green I found on my mini-trek through Old Town Alexandria last night. I can’t wait to get out and explore more… and find other awesome colors.

Look for a full set of Old Town photos soon. The architecture and the colors are amazing. I could spend hours wandering around looking at details.
